New Zealand's GST rate is 15%. There are two everyday calculations every tradie needs:
The calculator above handles both — switch between Add GST and Remove GST. It's a quick GST inclusive to exclusive calculator for invoices, quotes and expense claims.
If you're GST-registered, the GST-inclusive total is what your customer pays. Get the invoice itself right with our free NZ invoice generator, and read how to write invoices that get paid for the details that stop payments being delayed.
You charge GST once you're GST-registered, which is required once your turnover passes $60,000 in any 12-month period. Below that, registering is optional. If you're unsure how much GST you charge in NZ, the rate is a flat 15% on standard taxable supplies.
New Zealand GST is 15%. To add GST, multiply the GST-exclusive amount by 1.15. To work out the GST portion of a GST-inclusive price, multiply the total by 3 and divide by 23.
To remove GST from a GST-inclusive amount, divide the total by 1.15 to get the GST-exclusive price. The GST itself is the inclusive amount multiplied by 3 ÷ 23.
The standard GST rate is 15%, and it has been since 1 October 2010 (it was 12.5% before that). A few supplies are zero-rated or exempt.
You must register for GST if your turnover was over $60,000 in the last 12 months, or you expect it to be over $60,000 in the next 12 months. You can register voluntarily below that threshold.
If you are GST-registered, yes — your invoices (taxable supply information) must show GST. Use the calculator above to work out the GST-inclusive total to put on your invoice.
